A general term for insects belonging to the Diptera order, family Muscidae, subfamily Stomoxyinae, or one of these. The Japanese name, stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans , comes from the fact that they bite and suck the blood of warm-blooded animals such as cattle and horses, and the English name stable fly comes from the fact that they are often found around livestock sheds. This group of flies in the family Muscidae has hardened mouthparts adapted to sucking blood, and there are 10 genera and 48 species known worldwide, with 3 genera and 5 species known in Japan. There are particularly many species on the African continent, where there are many antelopes and other animals. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
