A volcanic island located in the southwest Pacific Ocean, in the western Solomon Islands, at the western end of the New Georgia Island Group, 21 km northwest of Kolombangara Island. It has an area of 500 km2 and a population of 9,200 (1970). It has several dormant volcanoes and hot springs, and is covered in tropical rainforest. The inhabitants are of Melanesian descent, and speak a non-Austronesian language (Papuan). There are many trading bases for small boats along the coast.
