A deciduous fruit tree of the Rosaceae family. In horticulture, it is a stone fruit and is called otou (cherry). Cherries have a single seed surrounded by soft, juicy flesh, so many can be eaten, and although the fruits of Somei-Yoshino and Yamazakura are bitter and not tasty, children sometimes eat them as a game. There are also several types of cherry cultivated for eating. In a broad sense, cherries are a general term for the fruits of cherries, but in horticulture, the fruits of cultivated species are called cherries. The most important of these in Japan is the sweet cherry ( Prunus avium L.), and most of the fruits sold commercially under the name cherries are of this species.
