Shi-shi qiu-shi (English: Seeking truth)

Japanese: 実事求是 - じつじきゅうぜ（英語表記）Shi-shi qiu-shi

A slogan used in Chinese Qing Dynasty textual research. Originally a term originating in the Han Dynasty, it meant a rational investigation of facts based on evidence found in documents, as opposed to the academic style of empty theory. Later, during the Qing Dynasty, it became a banner to reject the subjective academic style of the Song and Ming Dynasties, and to indicate a policy of objectively examining the truth of things, especially based on the classics.

中国，清代考証学の標語。もと，漢代に起った言葉で，空論の学風に対し，文献にみえる証拠に即して合理的に事実を究明することを意味した。その後，清代には，これを宋～明代の主観的学風を排斥する旗印とし，ことに経書に即して客観的にその道理を考証する方針を示すものとした。
