Zài lǐ jiào (English spelling)

Japanese: 在理教 - ざいりきょう(英語表記)Zài lǐ jiào
Zài lǐ jiào (English spelling)
A secret folk religion in China. It is said to have been founded by Yang Lairu in Jimo County, Shandong Province in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, and is also known as a branch of the White Lotus Sect. Its founder was Master Nankai (Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva), and it worships both Taoshang Laojun (Laozi) and Confucius, and its doctrine is the unity of the three religions: upholding Buddhist law, learning Confucian rituals, and cultivating Taoist practices. It strictly forbids drinking alcohol and smoking opium, and treats illnesses with the belief that "reason resides within me," so it spread throughout the country by the end of the 19th century. It was suppressed after the founding of the People's Republic of China. [Sakaide Yoshinobu]
