Sairyu-ji Temple

Japanese: 西隆寺 - さいりゅうじ

A nunnery located in Nara City at the request of Emperor Shotoku. In 767 (Jingo Keiun 1), a construction official was appointed and construction began. In 771 (Hoki 2), a temple seal was issued for the temple along with other large temples, so construction is thought to have been nearly complete around this time. The temple grounds were in the vicinity of Saidaiji Temple, in Ukyo Ichijo Nibo, covering an area of four cho (approx. 4 cho). In 880 (Gangei 4), it came under the jurisdiction of Saidaiji Temple. It is said that the temple was a place to wash the robes of Saidaiji monks, but this is unlikely to reflect the actual situation. It was abolished during the Kamakura period.

奈良市にあった称徳天皇の勅願にかかる尼寺。767年(神護景雲1)に造西隆寺司を置いて，造営が開始された。771年(宝亀2)諸大寺とともに寺印を頒布されているので，このころ造営がほぼ完成したと思われる。寺地は西大寺の近傍，右京一条二坊に4町の広さを占めた。880年(元慶4)に西大寺の管下に入った。それはこの寺が西大寺の僧らの法衣を洗濯する所であるというが，そのまま実情を表すとは考えられない。鎌倉時代には廃絶した。
