A musical term. In large Western pieces (sonatas, symphonies, concertos, etc.), this refers to the completely independent or relatively independent parts that make up the piece. Each part is called the first movement, second movement, etc. In many cases, the tempo is specified for each part, and the fast movement is called the fast movement and the slow movement is called the slow movement. A piece with this type of structure is called a multi-movement form, while a large piece that cannot be divided into parts, such as Liszt's Piano Sonata in B minor, is called a single-movement form. There are also many pieces that have movements but are played without interruption, such as Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 and No. 9. In a suite, they may be called movements, but are usually called the first, second, etc. [Toshiaki Kurosaka] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
