Greek name Kaukasos, English name Caucasus. From the Manich Depression in the north to the border with Iran and Turkey in the south, the area is about 440,000 km2, and it is divided into two parts, the North Caucasus (also called the Forward Caucasus) to the north of the Great Caucasus Mountains and the Transcaucasia (South Caucasus, Trans-Caucasus) to the south. The North Caucasus belongs to the Russian Federation and consists of the republics of Dagestan, North Ossetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Chechnya, and Ingushetia, Rostov Oblast, Krasnodar Krai (including the Adygei Republic), and Stavropol Krai (including the Karachay-Cherkess Republic), while the Transcaucasia consists of the three republics of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. …
