Alicante - Alicante (English spelling)

Alicante is the capital of Alicante province in the Valencia region in southeastern Spain. It has a population of 284,580 (2001). It faces the Mediterranean Sea and is located about 400 km southeast of Madrid. It is the largest import port in the New Castile region, with well-equipped port facilities, and imports about 800,000 to 900,000 tons of coal, timber, food, etc. annually. Exports include wine, fruit, and olive oil. It is a modern city with an international airport and straight roads running in a grid pattern. Industries such as fertilizer, tobacco, and aluminum are carried out here, as well as fishing, mainly sardines. With a warm climate throughout the year, it is also famous as a beach and winter resort.

It originated from the ancient Roman colony Lucentum, and was occupied by the Moors in 713. It was recaptured by the King of Aragon in 1265, and was besieged by French troops in 1709. It was ruled by the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939. The city walls surrounding the old town can be seen on the hillside surrounding the city, and Santa Barbara Castle stands on the hill to the northeast.
