Leader of the Romanian revolution in Transylvania in 1848-49. Born the son of a peasant in the village of Bidra in the Apuseni Mountains. He studied law in Cluj, but soon became a leader of the Romanian national movement in Transylvania during the 1848 Revolution. Due to the refusal of the Hungarian landlords to emancipate the serfs and the Transylvanian parliament's resolution to unite with Hungary, he fought against the Hungarian revolutionary army as a commander of the peasant army. He established a base in the Apuseni Mountains, but his movement was eventually used by the Austrian emperor, and he spent his final years in disappointment without having achieved either the emancipation of the serfs or national rights.
