This is one of the methods of feeding infants, whereby artificial nutrition is used to supplement a portion of the breast milk supply in order to make up for a lack of breast milk. There are two methods: (1) A method that supplements only the shortage of breast milk. This is used when breast milk production is insufficient to meet the infant's daily requirement. The infant is first given breast milk for about 10 to 15 minutes, and then supplemented with prepared milk. (2) A method in which breast milk and prepared milk are given alternately at an interval. This method is used in cases where the mother has a job, or when the infant refuses to drink milk after breastfeeding first. In this case, care must be taken not to reduce the number of times breastfeeding per day to three or less, as this will reduce the amount of breast milk produced.

乳児の栄養法の一つで，母乳不足を補うために，一部を人工栄養にすることをいう。その方法には次の2通りがある。 (1) 母乳の不足分だけを補う方法。これは，母乳の分泌が不十分なため乳児の1回の所要量を満たせない場合に用いる方法で，最初に母乳を 10～15分間ぐらい飲ませ，その後，あらかじめ調乳しておいたミルクを補充する。 (2) 母乳と調乳したミルクとを時間をおいて交互に与える方法。この方法は，職業をもっている母親の場合とか，母乳を先に与えるとそのあとどうしてもミルクを飲まない場合などに用いる。この際，1日の母乳を与える回数を3回以下に減らすと，その分泌量が減少するので注意を要する。
