Duse, Eleonora
Born: October 3, 1859 in Vigevano
Died April 21, 1924. Pittsburgh. Italian actress. She made her stage debut as a child actress at the age of four, and after her father's troupe disbanded, she appeared in a touring troupe. In 1879, she was recognized for her performance in Zola's Thérèse Raquin, and joined E. Rossi's troupe as the leading actress. In 1887, she formed her own troupe, and toured Austria, Germany, England, the United States, France, and other countries, establishing a worldwide reputation for her beautiful appearance, rich expressiveness, and delicate, analytical acting. In 1894, she fell in love with the poet D'Annunzio, and from these came the creation of La d'Etat and La Gioconda, both of which were successfully staged by Duse. Her hit roles included Juliet and Cleopatra in Shakespeare, Nora and Hedda Gabler in Ibsen, Rebecca in Rosmersholm (1906, set by G. Craig), and Monna Banna in Maeterlinck's. She was known as one of the two greatest tragic actresses of her time, along with the French actress S. Bernard. She retired in 1909, but returned in 1921 for financial reasons, and died during a tour of the United States.
