Alpinia speciosa - Alpinia speciosa
A perennial plant of the ginger family. Found in southern Kyushu, Okinawa, Indochina, and India. It grows to a height of about 2m, and in June and July, beautiful white flowers with red stripes hang down from the top of the stem in clusters. It is grown outdoors in warmer regions for decorative purposes, but is usually grown in greenhouses. It is also grown for flower arrangements. The cultivar Kifugetou is the only one cultivated for gardening, and its yellow-spotted leaves are used for flower arrangements. In recent years, the stems bearing spherical red fruits have also been used as flower material. It is propagated by dividing the plant.
