Brandberg (mountain)

Japanese: ブラントベルク[山]（英語表記）Brandberg

Located in the west of Namibia in southwestern Africa, this is the highest peak in the country. It is 2,606m above sea level. It is known for the many rock art ruins. It was discovered in 1917 by surveyor Mark R. Maack, and was subsequently investigated by Breuil and others. Breuil thought that some of the figures represented ancient Mediterranean peoples, and named the female figure "White Lady", but his theory has now been rejected. This is because the rock art in this region belongs to the later stage of San art, and is thought to have been transmitted from Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) via the Tsodilo Hills in Botswana after the 16th century.

アフリカ南西部，ナミビアの西部にある同国の最高峰。標高2606m。多くの岩面画遺跡があることで知られる。1917年に測量技師のマークR.Maackが発見し，その後ブルイユなどが調査した。ブルイユは，一部の人物像を古代の地中海民族をあらわすと考え，その女性像を〈白い婦人〉と名づけたが，彼の説は現在では否定されている。なぜなら，この地方の岩面画はサン美術の後期段階に属するもので，ボツワナのツォディロ丘陵を経て，ジンバブウェ(ローデシア)から16世紀以後に伝播したと考えられるからである。
