A city in central Qinghai Province, China. Population: 80,000 (1994). Directly under the Haixi Mongolian-Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. Located on the southern edge of the Qaidam Basin, it is a new industrial city that developed after the Qinghai-Tibetan Expressway was built in 1954. In ancient times, it was a Qiang region, and in the 4th century, it was ruled by the Tuyuhun. Yuan-dynasty paper money and the seal of the Zhongshu Province have been excavated here, making it an important transportation point to Tibet. It was established as a city in 1960, and became a county in 1965, but was elevated to city status again in 1980 when it was combined with Gansensu Caochang.
