A snail shell of the Mitridae family (illustration). The shell is 5.5 cm high, 1.6 cm wide, and spindle-shaped. It is thick and sturdy. The spiral spire is high and conical with eight layers. Each layer is weakly bulged, and the black background is cut with thin vertical and horizontal yellow stripes, creating a checkered pattern. The shell opening is narrow and long. The inner surface is white. The outer edge is somewhat straight with a circular indentation at the bottom. It lacks a lid. It is found from the Boso Peninsula south to Kyushu, and in the western Pacific Ocean, living on sandy bottoms at depths of 10 to 50 meters. The Mitridae family is diverse, with over 200 species found in Japan. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
