...There are various theories about the origin, but the most popular today is that it was created in Kamigata by the end of the mid-to-late Edo period (late 18th century) by incorporating the Iroha word order into the earlier "Tale Karuta." The Kamigata Iroha is a set that begins with "The night is dark just a moment away," and the set created later in Edo is the so-called "Inubou Karuta" that begins with "Even a dog will hit a stick if it walks." The only proverb common to both is "Pull out the kettle on a moonlit night."...
