Colchis is the name given by the ancient Greeks to the southeastern coast of Georgia on the Black Sea; in Georgian it is called Colhida, and they called themselves Egrisi. The Colchians are a tribe of Georgian people who are thought to have fought against Assyria in the 12th century BCE, and the name of this people, Kolka, is clearly inscribed on an Urartian inscription (8th century BCE) on the shores of Lake Van. From the 7th century BCE, the Greeks established colonies in Colchis, such as Dioscuria (now Sukhumi) and Phasis (Poti), and traded with Caucasian tribes who were said to speak 70 separate languages.
