A general term for coelenterates (cnidarians) belonging to the family Cerianthidae of the class Anthozoa. They are found in warm seas, and live in muddy tubes made of mucus on the sandy or muddy seafloor of inland bays up to several tens of meters deep. Their bodies are cylindrical, 10 to 25 cm long, with a mouth plate at the front end and a gradually tapering or spherical end at the rear end. Their body color is brown or purple. The mouth plate is 1.5 to 5 cm in diameter, and a row of short oral tentacles surrounds the central caruncle of the mouth plate, and 50 to 250 very long marginal tentacles surround the mouth plate as well. 花虫綱ハナギンチャク科Cerianthidaeに属する腔腸動物(刺胞動物)の総称。暖海域に分布し,内湾の数十mまでの砂や泥の海底中で,粘液でつくった泥の管の中にすむ。体は長さ10~25cmの円筒状で,前端に口盤があり,後端はしだいに細くなったり,球状に終わっている。体色は褐色や紫色。口盤は直径1.5~5cmで,口盤の中央にある口丘の周囲を短い口触手が1列にとり巻き,さらに口盤の周囲にも50~250本の非常に長い縁触手がとり巻いている。
