Arabic. Etymologically it means a gift, but in India it mainly means a tax-free privilege or tax-free land granted by the state. It was given to meritorious officials of the royal court, military commanders, temples and saints of Hinduism and Islam. There were also such tax-free areas within village communities. The term was used under Muslim dynasties, but was also used by Hindu dynasties such as the Marathas.
