? ‐312 Roman usurper emperor. Reigned 306-312. Son of Maximian. After his father's abdication, he led the Praetorian Guard in a revolt in Rome, falsely proclaimed himself emperor, and came to dominate Italy, Africa, and Hispania (Spain). He stopped persecuting Christians, but later came into conflict with Constantine I, who rose in Gaul. He was defeated at the Milvian Bridge outside Rome while trying to fight off Constantine's advance on Rome, and drowned in the Tiber River with 2,000 of his men.
