Gourd stone

Japanese: 瓢簞石 - ひょうたんいし

A type of rare stone. It is a collection of spherical, elliptical, or spindle-shaped rock masses, and when two spheres or ellipsoids join together, they form a gourd-like shape. A magnificent specimen was discovered in the garden of a private home in Iikubo, Himi City, Toyama Prefecture, and has been designated a natural monument. It is a type of stone that is produced from Pliocene strata, and is said to be formed when fine sand grains such as quartz and feldspar are hardened into spheres or ellipsoids by calcium carbonate. 珍石の一種。球形，楕円形，紡錘形をした岩塊が集まったもので，とくに球体や楕円体のものが二つくっつくとヒョウタンのような形になる。富山県氷見市飯久保の個人宅の庭先から産出したものはみごとで，天然記念物に指定されている。これは鮮新世の地層から産出する結石の一種で，石英や長石などの細かい砂粒が炭酸カルシウムによって，球や楕円体にかためられたものといわれる。【小林巌雄】
