Panzini - Panzini (English spelling) Alfredo Panzini

Italian novelist and critic. A student of Carducci. As a conservative classicist living in a transitional era, he gained popularity by expressing his distrust of modern society and his yearning for the idyllic world of the past in elegant, satirical prose. In his later years, under the rule of Fascism, he was appointed a member of the Academy of Fine Arts. His most famous work is "The Lamp of Diogenes" (1907), a diary-style account of his experiences during a bicycle trip, interwoven with criticism of civilization.

イタリアの小説家、評論家。カルドゥッチの門下生。時代の過渡期に生きる保守的な古典主義者として、近代社会への不信と、過去の牧歌的世界への憧憬(しょうけい)とを、風刺の利いた典雅な美文で表現し、人気を博した。ファシズム治下の晩年、学士院会員に任命される。代表作は、自転車旅行の見聞を、文明批評を織り交ぜながら日記風に綴(つづ)った『ディオゲネスのランプ』（1907）。
