Born: August 11, 1932, Melilla, Spanish Morocco. French playwright. When he was three years old, the Spanish Civil War began, and his father was arrested and sentenced to death, later disappearing. The shock he experienced at this time cast a large shadow over his later plays. After studying law in Madrid, he moved to France in 1954. His first work, Piquenique en campagne (Picnic on the Battlefield), was published in 1959 and premiered the following year. Within a few years, he became a leader of avant-garde theater in Europe and the United States. His style of writing, which he later called "panic theater," is characterized by its depiction of an absurd world full of cruelty and perversion that surrounds humans with the souls of innocent children, interwoven with humor, sadism, and fantasy. His representative works include The Architect and the Assyrian Emperor (1967).

フランスの劇作家。3歳のときスペイン内乱が始り，父は逮捕されて死刑の宣告を受け，のち行方不明。この頃に受けたショックが後年の劇作に大きな影を落している。マドリードで法律を学んだあと，1954年に渡仏。 59年に第1作『戦場のピクニック』 Piquenique en campagneが出版され，翌年初演。数年のうちに欧米諸国における前衛演劇の旗手となった。アラバルの作風は，後年自身で「パニック劇」と呼んだように，純真な幼児の魂をもつ人間を取囲む残酷と倒錯に満ちた不条理の世界を，ユーモアとサディズム，夢想を織り交ぜて描くところに特色がある。代表作は『建築家とアッシリアの皇帝』 (1967) など。
