Coventry

Japanese: コベントリー(英語表記)Coventry
Coventry
A city in the eastern part of the West Midlands region in central England. It is part of the Coventry district. It is located about 30 km east of Birmingham and close to the River Avon. The city developed after Leofric, Earl of Mercia, and his wife Godiva founded a Benedictine monastery in 1043. Legend has it that Godiva rode naked through Coventry on horseback to get her husband to lift heavy taxes, and there is a statue of her in the city. Coventry received a royal charter in 1182, and in the Middle Ages it prospered through wool trading and then the woolen textile industry. At the end of the 13th century, it became the center of the textile industry in the Midlands. At the end of the 17th century, ribbon production replaced cloth, and watch manufacturing also flourished. In the second half of the 19th century, modern industry began with the development of the bicycle industry, and at the end of the 19th century, automobile manufacturing began. Later, industries such as rayon and telephones were introduced, and today, automobiles, agricultural machinery, machine tools, and communication equipment are manufactured. During World War II, the city was bombed by German forces in November 1940 and April 1941, causing extensive damage to the city center, and St. Michael's Cathedral and other historical buildings were also destroyed, with some exceptions. The cathedral was rebuilt between 1956 and 1962, and the city center was rebuilt and modernized, becoming a modern industrial city with many parks and squares. It is home to the University of Warwick (1965) and Coventry University (1970). The city has an area of 97 km2 and a population of 304,200 (estimated 2004).
