Joachim Patenir (Patinir)

Joachim Patenir (Patinir)

Flemish painter. His early biographical facts are unclear, but he is assumed to have been born in or near Dinant, worked in Antwerp after 1515, and died there before October 5, 1524. Dürer visited him in Antwerp in 1521. He is known as the first landscape specialist in Flemish painting, and his works, which feature fantastical rocks, forests, towns, and rivers with biblical figures as backgrounds, have an idealistic breadth. He is also said to have painted landscapes for the works of Massys and other painters. His representative works include "Baptism of Christ" (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna), "Rest in the Flight" (Gemäldegalerie, Berlin), and "The Ferry at Caron" (Prado Museum, Madrid).
