The Southern Court (Daikakuji line) Imperial Court was established after the unification of the Northern and Southern Courts in 1392 (Genchu 9, Meitoku 3). Emperor Gokomatsu of the Northern Court (Jimyoin line) and Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, who supported him, did not fulfill the condition for unification, "the alternation of the two lines." Dissatisfied with this, the retired Emperor Gokameyama of the former Southern Court traveled to Yoshino in 1410 (Oei 17). The retired emperor eventually returned to Kyoto, but his visit to Yoshino was an opportunity for the remaining Southern Court retainers to seek the restoration of the Southern Court by presenting the imperial heirs of the Daikakuji line. This was the Later Southern Court, and many of its leaders were descendants of Prince Setsunari (Uenonomiya), the son of Emperor Gomurakami.
