A city in the Republic of Bashkortostan in western Russia. A mining and industrial city on the Belaya River, about 140 km south of the republic's capital, Ufa. An oil production center established in conjunction with the development of the Volga-Ural oil fields, oil production began in 1932, and oil refining began in 1936. Other industries include oil industry equipment manufacturing and food. Population 71,000 (1991 estimate).
