Aun - Aun

A transliteration of the Sanskrit a-hū. In esoteric Buddhism, "a" is the first sound pronounced with the mouth open, and all syllables originate from a, while "un" is the sound pronounced with the mouth closed, and is considered the end of syllables. A is exhalation and un is inhalation, and they symbolize the origin and ultimate of all things. Furthermore, it is said that the character a means non-birth and the character un means destruction. The esoteric interpretation of these two characters is detailed in Kukai's "Unjigi" and "Hizohoyaku." The right side of the Niou statues placed at the mountain gates of temples, the lions on the left and right pillars of the porch, and the guardian lions (meaning Korean dogs) at shrines have their mouths open on the right and closed on the left, representing a-un. When wrestlers are in sync during sumo matches, it is called "Aun no Kokyū."

サンスクリット語のア・フームa-hūの音写。密教では、「阿」は口を開いて発音する最初の音声で、すべての字音は阿を本源とし、「吽」は口を閉じて発音する音声で、字音の終末とする。また、阿は呼気、吽は吸気であるとともに、それらは万有の始源と究極とを象徴する。さらに阿字には不生(ふしょう)、吽字には摧破(さいは)の意があるなどとする。この2字の密教的な解釈については、空海の『吽字義(うんじぎ)』と『秘蔵宝鑰(ひぞうほうやく)』に詳しい。寺院の山門に安置する仁王(におう)や向拝(ごはい)の左右の柱頭にある獅子(しし)、神社の狛犬(こまいぬ)（高麗犬の意）などで、向かって右が口を開き、左が口を閉じているのは、阿吽を表す。相撲の仕切りなどで、呼吸があうのを「阿吽の呼吸」という。
