Born: February 2, 1893, near Ulaanbaatar
[Died] February 22, 1923.
Founder of the Mongolian People's Republic. Also known as Sukhbaatar. Born into a poor nomadic family near Urga (now Ulaanbaatar), at the age of 14 he worked as a horse boy between Urga and Kyakhta. In 1912 he joined the army of the Outer Mongolian Autonomous Government, graduated from the NCO school, was appointed as a lieutenant, and fought against the Babu-jab army, earning the title of Baatar (brave warrior). When the Chinese army occupied Outer Mongolia in 1918, he formed a revolutionary underground organization in Urga in 1919, and joined K. Choibalsan's group, which developed into the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party. In 1920 he contacted the Soviet government, and in 1921 he took action with the Red Army from Maimachin (Altan-Bulak), and on July 10 he established a people's government in Urga and became Minister of Defense. He died of tuberculosis at the young age of 30. It is said that he was poisoned to death.

Sühbaatar

The capital of Selenge Province in northern Mongolia. It is located 260 km north of Ulaanbaatar, at the confluence of the Orkhon and Selenge rivers. It is a railway stop on the Trans-Siberian Railway between Ulaanbaatar and the Selenge River, and also has a river port on the Selenge River, where ships navigate between Lake Khuvsgul and the city. Light industries such as construction, building materials, food, and lumber are well developed. Population: about 15,000.

モンゴル人民共和国の建設者。スフバートルとも呼ばれる。ウルガ (現ウラーンバートル) 近郊の貧しい遊牧民の家に生れ,14歳のときウルガからキャフタ間で馬子として働いた。 1912年外モンゴル自治政府の軍隊に入り,下士官学校を卒業,佐領に任じられ,バブージャブ軍と戦って勇名をはせ,バートル (勇士) の号を授けられた。 18年中国軍が外モンゴルを占領すると,19年ウルガに革命地下組織をつくり,K.チョイバルサンのグループと合流,これがモンゴル人民革命党に発展した。 20年ソビエト政府と連絡,21年赤軍とともにマイマチン (アルタン・ブラク) から行動を起し,7月 10日ウルガに人民政府を樹立,みずから国防相となった。まもなく 30歳の若さで結核のために死んだ。毒殺されたともいわれる。

モンゴル北部,セレンゲ州の州都。ウラーンバートルの北方 260km,オルホン川とセレンゲ川の合流点にある。ウラーンバートルとシベリア鉄道を結ぶ鉄道の中継地で,セレンゲ川の河港もあり,フブスグル湖との間を船舶が航行する。建設,建材,食品,製材などの軽工業が発達している。人口約1万 5000。
