Rivadavia, Bernardino

Japanese: リバダビア(英語表記)Rivadavia, Bernardino
Rivadavia, Bernardino
Born: May 20, 1780, Buenos Aires
Died September 2, 1845. A politician from Cadiz, Argentina. President (in office 1826-27). In 1811, he became Chief of Staff of the Triumvirate, and implemented reforms such as encouraging immigration and promoting agriculture. In 1821, as Minister of the Interior of the Buenos Aires Provincial Government, he worked hard to establish a perpetual land lease system, improve the military, reduce the authority of the church, and expand education. In 1826, he became the first president of the Republic. However, his centralized policies drew criticism from the Federalists, and his attempt to quickly reach a peace agreement with Brazil over Uruguay (1825-27) on unfavorable terms caused public discontent. In 1827, he resigned and went into exile in Europe. In 1834, he returned to Argentina temporarily, but was immediately sentenced to deportation. He left Brazil and traveled to Spain, where he died. His remains were repatriated in 1857, and his birthday became a national holiday.
