American painter. Along with B. West, he is known as America's greatest portrait and history painter from the colonial to federal periods. Born in Boston, he learned painting from P. Pelham, a painter to whom his mother remarried, and was also greatly influenced by J. Blackburn. After his "Boy with a Squirrel" (1765) was highly praised in London, he moved to England in 1774. He switched to history painting, and in 1776 was recommended as a member of the Royal Academy. In 1779, he clashed with the Academy when he did not exhibit "The Death of Chatham" in the Academy's exhibition, but instead charged an admission fee to show it to the public. After moving to England, he introduced the flamboyant Rococo style, and the straightforward, intimate style of his American days disappeared.
