...It has a smaller guitar shape and four strings. It is derived from the machete (small guitar), a folk instrument brought to Hawaii by Portuguese sailors in the late 19th century. The body is made of Hawaiian koa wood and generally has a tapered shape like a guitar, but the type without a tapered shape is called a pineapple type. The tuning is La, Mi, Do, So from the first string, and the fourth string is higher than the third string.
