Hispid hare

Japanese: アラゲウサギ（英語表記）hispid hare

A mammal of the order Lagomorpha and family Leporidae with stiff fur and short legs. It is found from Gorakhpur in the Hindustan plains on the southern foot of the Himalayas to Assam. It is 48 cm long and weighs around 2.5 kg. It is the size of a Japanese hare, but its hind legs are extremely short at less than 10 cm, its eyes are small, its ears are short (about 7 cm), and its claws are powerful, making it more similar to the Amami rabbit. However, unlike all other lagomorphs, the upper hair on its body is thick and bristly (coarse). The undercoat is thin and soft. The lower half of the upper hair is gray-brown and the tip half is black, and there is a yellow-white band near the tip, so the upper surface of the body is a marbled dark brown.

毛が硬く足が短いウサギ目ウサギ科の哺乳類。ヒマラヤ南ろくヒンドスターン平原のゴラクプールからアッサムまで分布。体長48cm，体重2.5kg前後。日本のノウサギ大であるが，後足が10cm未満と著しく短く，目が小さく，耳介が短く(約7cm)，つめが強大など，アマミノクロウサギにむしろ似ている。しかし他のすべてのウサギ類と異なり，体の上毛は太い剛毛(荒毛)。下毛は細く軟らかい。上毛は下半分が灰褐色でその先半分が黒く，先端近くに黄白帯があるため体上面は霜降りがある暗褐色を呈する。
