Japanese: 兼愛説 - けんあいせつ

This is the core idea of Mohist thought, preached by the Chinese thinker Mozi in the 4th century BC during the Warring States period. Heaven is the sovereign of all things in the world, and all people, regardless of age, social standing, are equal servants of Heaven. Just as Heaven loves all things impartially and selflessly, if people love the countries, families, and bodies of others just as they love their own countries, families, and bodies, the world will be peaceful and Heaven will reward them. This kind of indiscriminate love is called 'kan-ai' (love in common), and the Mohist school rejected it as a discriminatory love because the benevolence preached by Confucians is the kind of love that one extends to relatives and others, based on the love of one's father. The love of 'kan-ai' is not limited to spiritual love, but is also accompanied by benefits, and by loving each other, benefits are given to each other (kan-ai ko-ri). Also, as it is said that 'righteousness is benefit' and 'filial piety is benefiting one's parents', the benefit here must be in line with morality.

中国，戦国時代の前４世紀の思想家墨子(ぼくし)の説いた墨家思想の中核をなす考え。天地万物の主宰者である天に対して，人は長幼貴賤の別なく均しく天の臣であり，天が万物を公平無私に愛するがごとく，人もまた自分の国・家・身を愛すると同様に他人の国・家・身を愛するならばこの世は平和となり，天はこれを賞する，という。このような無差別愛を兼愛といい，儒家の説く仁は自分の父親を愛することからその愛を親族・他人におよぼす類のものであるから差別愛であるとして，墨家ではこれを排斥した。兼愛説の愛は精神的なものにとどまらず，利益をともなうもので，愛しあうことによって利益を与えあう（兼愛交利）。また〈義は利なり〉〈孝は親を利するなり〉とあるように，ここでの利は道徳に合致するものでなければならない。
