Kosovo [Province] (English spelling)

An autonomous province of the Republic of Serbia in Yugoslavia, located in the southwest of the republic. It has an area of 10,887 km2 and a population of 1.99 million (1995). The provincial capital is Pristina. The ethnic makeup is 74% Albanian (including Muslim Albanians), 18% Serb, 3% Montenegrins, 2% Muslim, 1% Turkish, etc. The province is roughly divided into the Metohija region in the west and the Kosovo region in the east, and the official name of the province was formerly the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohia (an autonomous region since 1945 that was elevated to a province in 1963).
