Galloping inflation occurs when a high annual rate of price increase of several tens of percent continues. Well-known examples include South American countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Colombia, which have experienced inflation rates of 20% to several hundred percent every year since World War II. These countries have been running huge fiscal deficits every year, which, combined with a high currency appreciation rate, is thought to be the cause of the high inflation rate. When such a high rate of price increase continues for a long period of time, wages tend to be determined directly based on the cost of living index.
