A city in the southeastern tip of Rajasthan, northwest India. Population 538,000 (1991). It occupies the upper reaches of the Chambal River, which flows into the Marwa Plateau. The river valley plain stretches across, and is irrigated by a canal from the Kota Dam, which was completed as part of the Chambal River Development Plan. Wheat, cotton, and sorghum are collected and distributed, and industries such as spinning, matches, and metal processing are based here. In the early 17th century, it became the capital of the Kota Kingdom, which continued to exist as a princely state even under British rule. The palace from that time remains, and the manuscripts in the museum's collection are famous. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
