Kanaoka Kose

Dates of birth and death unknown. A representative painter of the early Heian period and the late 9th century. Founder of the Kose school. His name is mentioned with a respectful title in the poetry and prose collection Kanke Bunso by his contemporary Sugawara no Michizane, and it is known that he was well-known even while he was alive. Although no personal belongings remain, documents indicate that he painted a statue of the sainted master Kyu-tetsu at the Daigakuryo in 880 (Gōshidaishō), as well as creating folding screen and shoji paintings. As a courtier, he also supervised Shinsen-en, which was the imperial garden at the time, and designed the garden. Since Michizane asked Kanaoka to paint the scenery of Shinsen-en, it is believed that Kanaoka worked with Japanese as well as Chinese themes, and it is estimated that while Kanaoka's Japanese paintings retained elements of Chinese paintings, they also increasingly took on a Japanese style.

生没年不詳。平安前期、9世紀後半を代表する絵師。巨勢派の祖。その名は、同時代人であった菅原道真(すがわらのみちざね)の詩文集『菅家文草(かんけぶんそう)』中に敬称を伴って記されており、生存中より高名であったことが知られる。遺品は残されていないが、880年（元慶4）に大学寮の先聖先師九哲の像を描いたのをはじめ（『江次第抄(ごうしだいしょう)』）、屏風絵(びょうぶえ)や障子絵を制作したことが文献に記されている。また廷臣として、当時の宮苑(きゅうえん)であった神泉苑の監を務め、作庭も行っていた。この神泉苑の風光を描くことを道真より求められていることから、金岡は中国的な画題のほかに日本的な画題も扱ったと考えられ、金岡において、日本の絵画は唐絵(からえ)的な要素を残しつつも、和様化の傾向を深めていったと推定されている。
