The Industrial Revolution led to the rise of large-scale mechanized industry, which, on the one hand, eliminated the need for skill and physical strength, but on the other hand, forced working families to sell their labor to supplement their household income. This had a decisive effect on turning women into wage laborers. Since women's labor was generally used to supplement the household income and they were weaker than men in asserting and realizing their own demands, capital was able to force low wages and excessive work, which had the effect of lowering wages and other general working conditions.
