A city on the western edge of Yamaguchi Prefecture. It was incorporated as Akamagaseki City in 1889 and renamed in 1902. The central city area used to be called Akamagaseki, a key port facing the Kanmon Straits, and flourished as a transit point for domestic shipping from the mid-Edo period. Since the Meiji period, it has developed as a transportation hub connecting Kyushu and the continent. However, with the construction of a series of wide-area high-speed transportation networks, beginning with the completion of the Kanmon Railway Tunnel in 1942 and the National Highway Tunnel in 1958, Shimonoseki is losing its geographical advantage as a transportation hub. The city is connected by the Sanyo Shinkansen, Sanyo Main Line, Sanin Main Line, Chugoku Expressway, and Kanmon Expressway, and there is an international ferry terminal at Shimonoseki Port. Currently, urban development is being carried out around Shin-Shimonoseki Station on the Shinkansen line, and an artificial island is being constructed off the coast of Kitaura. The city boasts the highest catch of pufferfish in Japan, but its main industry, the fisheries industry, is in decline. Industries are centered around the Hikoshima area, and include transportation equipment, food, and metals. Akama inkstones made from Akama stone are a local specialty. There is Akama Shrine, known for the Senteito Festival, Dannoura, the mica basalt of Mutsure Island (a natural monument), Hinoyama Park, the grave of Takasugi Shinsaku (a historic site), and Kawatana Onsen. In February 2005, Toyoura County's Kikugawa Town, Toyoda Town, Toyoura Town, and Toyokita Town were incorporated. The area is 715.89 km2 . The population is 280,947 (2010). → Related topics Fugu dishes Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
