Sorge, Richard
Born: April 10, 1895 in Baku
[Died] November 7, 1944, Tokyo German journalist. His father was German and his mother was Russian. He spent his childhood in Berlin and volunteered for the army during World War I. In 1920, he joined the German Communist Party. He went to Moscow as a Comintern agent and joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1924. In 1929, he became a member of the Fourth Department (intelligence) of the Soviet Red Army, and in 1930, he went to China. In Shanghai, he met Hidemi Ozaki, a special correspondent for the Asahi Shimbun. He worked in China until 1932, and returned to Germany. In 1933, he came to Japan as a special correspondent for the German newspaper Frankfurter Zeitung. He had frequent access to the German embassy as a private intelligence officer for Otto, the German ambassador to Japan. In 1941, he was arrested after his espionage activities were discovered (→Sorge Incident), and executed at Sugamo Prison. He wrote Prison Diary.

[Died] July 20, 1916. Ablancourt, German playwright. After writing the first expressionist play, Der Bettler (1912), he converted to Catholicism and strengthened the religious overtones in works such as König David (16). He was killed in action in France during World War I.

ドイツのジャーナリスト。父はドイツ人,母はロシア人。幼少時をベルリンで過し,第1次世界大戦では軍隊に志願入隊。 1920年ドイツ共産党に入党した。コミンテルン要員としてモスクワに行き,24年ソ連共産党入党。 29年ソ連赤軍第4部 (諜報) 本部員となり,30年中国に入った。上海で朝日新聞特派員尾崎秀実と知合う。 32年まで中国で活動し,ドイツへ帰国。 33年にドイツの『フランクフルター・ツァイトゥンク』紙特派員として来日。駐日ドイツ大使オットーの私設情報官として同大使館に出入りし,41年スパイ活動が露見して検挙され (→ゾルゲ事件 ) ,巣鴨拘置所で刑死した。著書に『獄中記』がある。
