This river originates on Mount Kobushigatake in the Kanto Mountains, flows southeast through the Kanto Plain, and empties into Tokyo Bay. It is 173 km long and has a drainage area of 2,940 km2 . It forms a gorge near Mitsumineguchi, passes through the Chichibu Basin and Nagatoro, and emerges into the plain at Yorii Town. It has frequently flooded, and repairs such as changing its course have been made, but major floods have disappeared since the Arakawa Floodway was completed.
