Pacific herring (herring, herring, spring herring)

A polar migratory fish (illustration) that is widely distributed in the northern Pacific Ocean and is a representative of the Clupeidae family. It is also called kado or kado-iwashi in various places. The very similar herring C. harengus (English name: herring) is also found in the northern Atlantic Ocean and is found in large numbers along the coast of Norway, in the North Sea, and in Newfoundland on the American continent. In Japan, it is found in Hokkaido, north of the Tone River on the Pacific coast, and north of Toyama Prefecture on the Sea of Japan side. Although it is a marine fish, it can tolerate brackish water and sometimes enters lakes that connect to the sea, such as Lake Notoro in Hokkaido and Lake Hinuma in Ibaraki.

ニシン目ニシン科を代表する太平洋北部に広く分布する寒帯性の回遊魚（イラスト）。各地でカド，カドイワシなどとも呼ばれる。大西洋北部にもたいへんよく似たヘリングC.harengus(英名herring)が分布し，ノルウェー沿岸，北海およびアメリカ大陸ニューファンドランドに多く産する。日本では北海道と，太平洋側は利根川以北，日本海側は富山県以北に分布する。海産魚ではあるが，汽水にも耐えられ，海とつながる湖に入ることもあり，北海道の能取（のとろ）湖，茨城の涸沼（ひぬま）などにも生息する。
