It is also called lobular pneumonia or catarrhal pneumonia. This type of pneumonia occurs mainly in the bronchioles, and generally has milder symptoms such as fever and coughing than ordinary pneumonia, in which the inflammation spreads to the entire alveoli. In cases of infection with streptococci or staphylococci, it develops secondary to upper respiratory tract infection, and in cases caused by influenza, it often develops secondary to peritracheitis or bronchiolitis. It is advisable to select antibiotics according to the type of bacteria, but if secondary infection is prevented, most cases will heal naturally. However, this type of pneumonia is common in elderly people, and caution is required as symptoms often progress gradually and affect the entire body.

小葉性肺炎，カタル性肺炎ともいう。細気管支を中心にして起る肺炎で，炎症部分が肺胞全体に広がる普通の肺炎に比べて，一般に熱，咳などの症状は軽症である。レンサ球菌，ブドウ球菌の感染による場合は，上気道炎から続発し，流行性感冒などにかかって起る場合は，気管周囲炎や細気管支炎から続発することが多い。菌種に応じて抗生物質を選択することが望ましいが，二次感染を防止すれば，大部分は自然になおる。ただし高齢者の肺炎はこの形が多く，症状が次第に進んで全身を侵すことが多いため注意を要する。
