International Organization of Journalists

International Organization of Journalists

An international organization of journalists' unions. Abbreviated as IOJ. Founded in June 1946. Its predecessors were the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), founded in 1926, and the Federation of Journalists of the Allied and Free Countries, founded in 1941. As the Cold War intensified, the Western countries withdrew from the organization in May 1952, and the IFJ was re-established. Since then, it has been organized mainly by journalists from the Eastern bloc. Since 1947, it has operated from its headquarters in Prague, Czech Republic, but the Czech Ministry of Interior revoked the IOJ's recognition and expelled it from the country (1995) due to its "historical ties with the communist regime." As of 2011, its headquarters is said to be in Lisbon, Portugal, but its actual status is unknown.
