A green, short, hair-like seaweed that often grows on rocks and piles along the coasts of Japan, especially in winter near the high tide line of inland bays. It belongs to the Chlorophyceae family, Euonymus nigricans. The body consists of a single row of cell filaments, 10-25 μm thick, each containing one nucleus and one ring-shaped chloroplast. In winter, when the seawater temperature is low, the plant mainly reproduces asexually by producing zoospores, but in spring, when the temperature rises, it produces male and female gametes and reproduces sexually. The zygote remains single-celled over the summer, and in autumn zoospores are formed inside it. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
