〘 noun 〙 In the Edo period, a person selected from among non-people was made to work as a night watchman in each town. In Osaka, they belonged to four places (Tennoji, Tobita, Dotonbori, Tenma) and were responsible for domestic work during ceremonial occasions, as well as night watch and gate keeper. In addition to this, wealthy families built guardhouses at their entrances for self-defense. ※Zappai・Mizu-kagen (1817) "A guard sleeping outside the gates, never letting his guard down" Source: The Selected Edition of the Japanese Language Dictionary About the Selected Edition of the Japanese Language Dictionary Information |
