Born: January 29, 1688 in Stockholm [died] March 29, 1772, London Swedish scientist, philosopher, and theologian. He first studied natural science, but at the age of 55, he received a divine revelation and realized the limitations of the scientific method, and became active as a divine being and mystical theologian. Philosophically, he regarded the infinite as the indivisible power and life in all creation, and made this infinite being God. He also asserted the absolute unity of God in nature and person, and rejected the traditional doctrine of the unity of the three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, by interpreting the Trinity as the unity of love, wisdom, and activity in one Godhead. After his death, the New Jerusalem Church, which follows his doctrine, was founded in London in 1787, and the Swedenborg Society was founded in 1810. His most famous work is De coelo et ejus mirabilibus, et de inferno (1758), Heaven and Hell.
