In general, the term refers to films that use narrower film (8mm, 16mm, etc.), as opposed to the 35mm film used for commercial cinemas, which is called the "standard type." However, originally it was a general term for "films" shot using small, lightweight equipment (Pathé Baby, Cine Kodak) developed and sold for amateurs by the French company Pathé and the American company Kodak, and popularized worldwide as "home movies" in the late 1920s, and cheap reversal film (using a reversal phenomenon without using negative film) made for that equipment.
